Managing Merchant Category Code (MCC) Restrictions on Cards
Teampay now lets you apply MCC (Merchant Category Code) controls to cards, giving your team more precise control over where company funds can be spent. Whether you're enabling purchases only in approved categories or blocking certain types of spend entirely, MCC restrictions make policy enforcement seamless.
What Are MCC Controls?
Merchant Category Codes are 4-digit numbers used to classify types of businesses (e.g., 5814 = Fast Food Restaurants). By setting up MCC rules on a card, you can:
-
Allow only specific merchant types (e.g., SaaS tools)
-
Block specific merchant types (e.g., restaurants, liquor stores)
You can apply MCC controls either:
-
Globally (for organization-wide default cards)
-
Per card (for individual team members or purposes)
How to Set MCC Restrictions on a Card
Follow these steps to edit MCC restrictions on any Teampay-issued card:
1. Open the Card Details Page
From the Committed tab or another relevant view, click into the card you'd like to manage.
2. Click the "..." Menu
Located below the card image, click the three-dot menu to open card actions.
3. Select Edit MCC Codes
From the dropdown options, choose Edit MCC Codes.
4. Choose Your List Type:
-
Allow List: Only these MCCs can be used (everything else is blocked)
-
Deny List: These MCCs are blocked (everything else is allowed)
Use the search bar to find MCCs by keyword or number, then click the + icon to add them.
5. Click Save MCCs
When you're done selecting MCCs, hit Save MCCs to apply the settings.
✅ How MCC Settings Appear
-
Cards with Allow List MCCs will show MCCs in green.
-
Cards with Deny List MCCs will show MCCs in red.
This status is visible both in the card detail view and in the main Committed or card tracking view:
📝 Notes & Best Practices
-
You can add multiple MCCs per card.
-
Make sure to communicate MCC restrictions to cardholders—they’ll see a decline message if they attempt an out-of-policy transaction.
